Professional Experience (School of Education)Assessment

Assessment

The supervising teacher will complete two reports on the preservice teacher’s (PST’s) progress: the Midpoint Report (midway through the placement) and the Supervising Teacher Report (on the final day of the placement).

Both reports examine the PST’s professional knowledge, professional practice, and professional engagement, and thus align with the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers of the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership.

The sections below outline when and how to complete the two reports and what to do in the case of failed placements. Samples of the Supervising Teacher Report (for informational use only) are included below.

The Midpoint Report

The supervising teacher and the PST will review the PST’s progress midway through the placement (e.g., in the second week of a four-week placement) using the Midpoint Report [PDF 185KB]  form. The supervising teacher should download the form for completion (unlike the Supervising Teacher Report, which is completed entirely online).

This process ensures that any difficulties can be addressed and rectified before the  Supervising Teacher Report is completed. The PST should retain a copy of the Midpoint Report as part of their professional experience assessment.

If the PST is generally meeting expectations, there is no need to submit the report to the University.  If the supervising teacher reports that the PST is not meeting expectations in any areas, they should request additional support from the University to help the PST to meet expectations during the remainder of the placement. In this case, the supervising teacher should email the report to Placement Partnering and Operations at education.placements@latrobe.edu.au. Then an academic staff member will work with the supervising teacher and the PST to help overcome any difficulties.

Final assessment: Supervising Teacher Report

The supervising teacher assesses the PST’s overall performance using the Supervising Teacher Report – an online form – on the last day of the PST’s placement, before the PST leaves the school or setting. The Placement Partnering and Operations team will email the supervising teacher a link to this report before the placement commences.

To complete the report, the supervising teacher should:

  1. Carefully read the instructions that Placement Partnering and Operations emailed you regarding the online reporting process. If you can’t locate the email with the report link, please contact us at education.placements@latrobe.edu.au or on (03) 9479 5904.
  2. Follow the unique link from the email to the PST’s online report (you can do this at any time if you would like to see what the report looks like).
  3. Complete the report on the final day of the PST’s placement. You are required to report on and confirm completion of the full placement duration, so the report must not be submitted before the last day of the placement. However, you may begin drafting the report earlier. Ensure you save your draft and return to it using the original email link.
  4. Discuss the report with the PST on the final day of the placement.
  5. In the PST’s presence, after discussion, click the checkboxes for the supervising teacher and the PST that acknowledge the report has been discussed.
  6. Click to submit the form.

Once you click submit, you will be presented with the option to download a copy of your completed report. You may also view the submitted report at any time by following the original email link to the report.

Prompt submission will facilitate the supervising teacher payment and submission of the PST’s results.

Once the report has been submitted and processed, the PST can access the report via the assessment tab in InPlace.  The report is saved against the agency where the placement was undertaken. The PST can click on the download link to view and save a copy of the report.

Failed placements

The Supervising Teacher Report indicates whether a PST has attained satisfactory levels of professional knowledge, professional practice, and professional engagement according to their level of study. A satisfactory report is a hurdle requirement of the subject; without it, a pass cannot be achieved in a professional experience subject.

If the supervising teacher determines that the PST’s performance does not meet expectations in one or more of the standards assessed, they should assign an overall result indicating this and consult the University for further discussion of this outcome. The outcomes requiring further discussion are as follows:

  • Early Childhood reports: ‘Does Not Meet Expectations’ or ‘Has Not Met the Graduate Teacher Standards’
  • Primary and Secondary reports: ‘Not Satisfactory’ or ‘Require Further Discussion Regarding Decision’

If assigning this result, contact Placement Partnering and Operations at education.placements@latrobe.edu.au or by telephoning (03) 9479 5904 to arrange further discussion.
